Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle holistic hands on therapy based around the body’s natural rhythms.
All life needs movement to remain healthy and so our bodies too are in a constant state of motion. As well as external motion our bodies express movement within us. We are full of rhythms, currents and pulsations, some of which we are aware of such as heartbeat, breathing and the movement of the digestive system.
Another much less obvious rhythm is the tidal fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid that is within and surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The bones of the cranium (head) and sacrum (at the base of the spine) move to allow for this fluctuation – thus called craniosacral motion.
A healthy, balanced craniosacral motion leads to healthy function of all the body systems. Our bodies are constantly working to remain in balance but sometimes it becomes overwhelmed by physical or emotional knocks, stress and disease.
By using gentle touch Craniosacral Therapists are trained to detect this rhythm and help to re-balance the system. Almost anyone can be helped by treatment to ease life’s stresses and increase a sense of vitality and well-being. You don’t have to be ill or have any particular symptoms to feel any benefit.
As it works at a fundamental level its applications are wide ranging.
These are just some examples of the conditions commonly treated:
- Head, neck and shoulder problems
- Backache and sciatica
- Stress and its many related symptoms
- Sleep problems
- Muscular aches and pains, arthritis, rheumatism and polymyalgia
- Digestive disorders/ irritable bowel disease
- Menstrual/menopausal problems
- Pregnancy and postnatal
- Birth trauma
- Sinusitis
- Tinnitus
- Neuralgias, MS/ME
- Jaw pain
- Lack of energy
Craniosacral Therapy is suitable for all ages from newborn to the elderly and is often beneficial for fragile and painful conditions as well as during pregnancy or after injury or surgery. It is particularly beneficial for young babies.
Treatment is usually undertaken on a couch without the need to undress. You will only be asked to remove your coat and shoes. Babies are treated with their clothes and nappy on.
Anne trained with The Institute of Craniosacral Studies and is a member of The Craniosacral Therapy Association that upholds standards in the United Kingdom and is continuing her professional development. Anne originally trained as a nurse and midwife and is a mother of three children
