chavutti ayurvedic massage

Pronounced cha-voo-tee tirumal, literally meaning ‘foot pressure’. This ancient Indian, hot oil massage is unique, as the treatment is principally applied with the bare foot using the hands only for the finishing touches. As sensitive as the hand, the foot gives a deeper, more even pressure.

Contrary to popular belief the practitioner does not stand or walk on the back. The recipient lies on floor mats whilst the practitioner applies the foot like a hand, one at time, holding on to a rope for support and balance. Intricate footwork sweeps, kneads and frictions the skin and connective tissue that supports the muscles, organs and energy pathways (nadis/meridians).

Chavutti focuses precise attention on aligning and lengthening the spine. This creates space and allows the breath to deepen. It provides the potential for emotional and physical change relieving deep seated tension and pain. The fluid full-body strokes help facilitate this release bringing body and mind back to their natural equilibrium.

Wendy Young
Wendy started practicing Yoga 9 years ago. She has recently completed a two year Yoga Teacher Training course at the Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales. This was a Satyananda Yoga based training course which is also recognized by the British Wheel of Yoga. She regularly attends courses and retreats in the Ashram to deepen her practice and further understanding of Yoga. She has been teaching for two years and has a calm, caring and down to earth approach.

Wendy originally trained in Traditional Thai massage and Indonesian Oil massage in 2001. After setting up her own massage practice, she then started studying and working with Ayurveda, India’s traditional health system, focusing on the healing effects of diet and lifestyle. She has spent time in an Ayurvedic hospital in India studying and receiving treatment. She started training and practicing Chavutti Thirumual in 2004. She studied in Chiang Mai, Thailand with an Ayurvedic Master, then in London at the Soma Institute with Emma Field and in Kerala, southern India with a healer in his 80’s! These professional qualifications and experiences, together with ongoing Yogic and Ayurvedic studies, inspire and inform her philosophy of an integrated approach to well-being.
